Birthday Parties: For Kids Or You?

By Yolanda Adams

As a parent, every year I look forward to my daughters birthday party, but I am not one to go "all out" by getting a bunch of decorations or by making her party be better than the last. I know of some parents who will go above and beyond for their child's birthday. They will go out and get the decorations, party favors, the cutest or coolest cake, presents galore, balloons, a variety of food samples and then come up with a list of things for the kids to do. Now, don't get me wrong, I do think that throwing your child a party is fun and exciting, but who are you really doing it for?

To me it just doesn't make sense to throw a big party or make a big to-do about it when all your child really cares about is the cake, ice cream and of course the presents.

Are you trying to impress the other parents? or are you trying to out do yourself to make this birthday better than the last? Think about this if you will, your child is turning 1, they really have no clue what the whole birthday thing is about, all they know is people are giving them lots of stuff and they get to eat all this yummy food! So, I know ask you this, do you really think your child would care weather or not you had a big carnival birthday or pony rides?

Now, I don't have a lot of money to spare like some parents do, but even if I did I wouldn't go all out for a birthday she wouldn't even remember in the first place. Sure I would have pictures and a VHS tapes, but to go through all the stress that comes with throwing a child's birthday party in the first place, it's just really not that serious.

I now ask you to ask yourself this, who are you throwing the birthday party for, you or your child? In the beginning when you start the whole process, what goes through your mind. Do you think about what would be cool or cute, what kind of cake should you should buy and what kind of decorations you should put on the cake.

What about the theme for parties, do you walk the stores or surf the net trying to find the perfect theme so you could get the stuff together. If you answered yes to any of these questions then chances are you are the one that is looking more forward to this birthday than your own child. Here is one more question to ask yourself, does your child have any say so in what kind of party he/she wants? I understand that a 1 year old couldn't say, "Mommy, Daddy I want a spider man birthday." or " can you make sure that I have the coolest games and make sure you invite a lot of people, even people I don't know" I do know that even though your child may be one, he/she must have a favorite character they like. You are the one who knows your child better then any one else, so instead of you trying to figure out what kind of party to have, get your child involved and see what they would like.

Throwing birthday parties for kids does not have to be a stressful time. Kids at a young age could care less weather or not they had pony rides or a carnival theme. All they know is people are giving them lots of yummy food and they get lots of toys! If you can allow yourself to let go of trying impress your self or others with a birthday extravaganza and concentrate on having fun with your child then it can and will be a fun and enjoyable time. I know to some I may be sounding a tad harsh, but in all honesty, it's true. You can still have games, decorations and a theme for your child's birthday, but it really doesn't have to be an all day event to get the party set up the day before it's party time.

Think about your child's interests and what they like to do, not what you think would be cool.. Remember, it's your child's day to be the center of attention, its not the decoration they care about, it's about being with the people they love and care about that makes a world of difference in your child's life and that is what they will remember the most.

Buying New Baby Gifts: Unique Baby Gifts for a Baby Shower

By Edie Mindell

Sometimes choosing gifts for baby showers is not as simple as going to the store in which the expectant mother is registered, and picking an item on the list. Sometimes, mothers choose not to register with a specific store, and sometimes, they register with a store but when you print out the list, there are no items that were picked that fall in your budget.

There are even times when parents decide not to find out the gender of the baby until the date of birth. So you ask yourself, "What do I do in this circumstance? What kind of gift can I buy? What kind of gift would be suitable for any baby, whether they be a boy or a girl?" When it comes to deciding on a unisex gift for a baby shower, choosing general items that are essential for every baby is key.

Today, there are tons of unisex baby clothes available in the market. Go to your local baby department store, or check the infants clothing department of any major department store. You are bound to find different types and styles of unisex clothing for babies from 0 to 24 months. If you are technology savvy and an avid online shopper, unisex baby clothes can also be found online. There are some great online deals for unisex baby clothes, so be sure to surf the web for competitive prices.

Many baby accessories like baby blankets, baby bottles, pacifiers, and diaper bags usually come in unisex styles. A light green color or a soft yellow are common colors used for both buys and girls. A lot of diaper bags and blankets are already unisex, so finding one should not be difficult. Baby bottles and pacifiers are general items that all babies use, and come in standard, unisex styles most of the time.

Infant and toddler toys are another great idea when it comes to choosing a unisex present for a baby shower. Mobiles, plush toys, teething toys, bath toys, and plastic baby-safe books are good general toys. Learning and activity toys are becoming more and more popular, and are great for developing the little ones mind and intellect.

Baby Einstein, Leapfrog, Fisher Price, and Little Tikes make toys for infants and toddlers that are amazing for teaching babies the basics before preschool. Some of the most popular games include those that teach babies the alphabet, numbers, basic language, shapes, and the most primary fundamentals of science and geography. Toys that develop a childs musical ear and that deal with identifying sounds are also very popular today.

A classic unisex gift idea for a baby shower that never fails is to create a gift basket with all the essentials. Here you can include diapers, baby bottles, pacifiers, small toys, and you can throw in some candy for the mommy-to-be. Add your own flair by decorating it, again, in colors that are not directly associated with either the male or female gender (like blue or pink). Baby baskets are a fun gift and are very useful for the babys parents. Dont forget to make it cute and creative!

Party Planning 101

By Carol Ann

Your first step in planning a successful party is to pick a theme that is age appropriate and will suit all your invited guests. Some themes that are great fun include a costume party, murder mystery party and decade theme parties. These parties allow you guests to dress up and take on a character role, which almost everyone will enjoy.

The second step, of party planning, is to create your guest list. You will want to try and include people from the various aspects of your life as this will allow for more interesting interactions and conversations. It is also important to invite a few people who know each other. If you invite a guest that will not know any one else at the party they may feel out of place and reluctant to attend.

The third thing on the list is the venue. Keep in mind that you don't want to go overboard decorating and spending, instead you need to find good and inexpensive ways to create the atmosphere that you want. Some great ways to decorate on a budget are to shop at second hand stores and yard sales for ideas. Some of the best party ideas can come from letting your own mind wander, or from the Internet.

Your last step is to decide on what type of menu you are going to have for your guests. You want to be sure it is appropriate not only to your theme, but your budget and time frame as well. Keeping it simple will allow you more free time to enjoy the party, therefore buffets or bring your dish parties, or choices items that can be prepared before the party are excellent choice. Making a menu that is overly complicated tends to be a common mistake among a host or hostess, as you will be so busy preparing and serving you are left with minimal time to enjoy you guests.

Using these party planning guidelines will help you have a spectacular party, where not only the guests will have a good time, but you will as well.
